TELA Initial Teacher Training

Growing talent, pursuing excellence, together. We offer School Direct primary and secondary initial teacher training places in Partnership with the University of Leicester School of Education, Warwick University (Drama, Art and Design & Textiles) and Loughborough University  (PE).

We offer primary and secondary PGCE accreditation including Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and Master level credits (University of Leicester 60 Masters credits / Loughborough University (PE only) 90 Masters credits)  For secondary training in Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Modern Foreign Languages (French), English, History, Geography, Drama, Design & Textiles (Art, Textiles & Food Technology) as well as Physical Education across our alliance family. This School Direct secondary PGCE combines school based and university based training, as well as personalised inputs and customised pedagogy and leadership training programme from the Thomas Estley Learning Alliance (TELA). All Schools Direct teaching placements are in local hubs within our TELA family and associated Leicestershire schools. We aim to attract and train the very best teachers; tomorrow’s leaders in education. We work with 20 other schools (primary and secondary) as their lead School Direct training school, offering around 50 places a year.

This is a non salaried route. Cost is £9000, and bursaries are available for certain subjects areas– see www.education.gov.uk. While the intention is that the School Direct training will lead to employment, we cannot guarantee that this will take place, although support to gain employment will be given, and a high quality, leadership based NQT programme will be in place in Year 2 for all appointed teachers.

Don’t hold back from applying for teacher training in maths, physics, chemistry or a language because of your subject knowledge confidence. You may still be able to train to teach these subjects (and be eligible for the bursaries they attract) by building up or refreshing your existing knowledge with a subject knowledge enhancement (SKE) programme.

Quotes from our School Direct students 2013 /14

I’ve really enjoyed my experience at Thomas Estley Community College. I feel lucky to have come here for my phase A. My co-tutor and the rest of the department has been fantastic.

I could not have asked for a better school to begin my teacher training in.
