We expect students to aim for 100% attendance and to be punctual to College and to all lessons. In the case of absence due to illness the College would need to be notified by telephone that same day. We expect routine dental or medical appointments to be made outside the College day, but appreciate that when consultants or other specialists are involved this may not be possible.
Students are registered by 8.30am. If they are absent, then the College must be notified before 8.30am on every morning of the absence. Parents can expect a telephone call if there are any unexplained absences.
If your child is taken ill during the College day, they will need to go through the proper system of getting permission from a First Aider to go home. In this case you will be contacted by the College. Please help us to reinforce this with your child by not accepting requests directly from them to come home.
Taking time out of school during term time will affect your child’s grades. Experience has provided us with strong evidence that students who have missed significant amounts of time, for whatever reason, seldom achieve their academic potential.
Time off College for a family holiday is not a right, and schools are advised both by the Department for Education to actively discourage this. Thomas Estley Community College will therefore unauthorise any request for a family holiday during term time. Only in exceptional circumstances such as when a family needs to support each other during or after a crisis will time off from College be authorised and this will be at the discretion of the Principal.
